From Colour to Mask Journal
This journal shares the stories and creative explorations behind my picture book From Colour to Mask.
Through colour, plasticine, and drawing, I document how simple experiments can grow into characters, masks, and storytelling.
These reflections come from my sketchbooks, studio practice, and years of working with children — exploring how creativity develops through process, play, and imagination.

These journal entries document the creative development behind my picture book From Colour to Mask — from early experiments with colour, plasticine and watercolour through to characters, masks, storytelling and the finished publication.
The book grew through playful studio experimentation rather than from a fixed story idea. Colours were mixed, shapes began to suggest characters, and those characters gradually found their way into drawings, paintings, masks and stories.
Some entries draw on earlier teaching experiences and observations of how children respond to masks, transformation and imaginative play. Others document more recent work developed through Maria Grujicic Studio, including workshop experiments and the processes that eventually informed the book.
I will continue adding small pieces of the process here — sketches, materials, observations, workshop connections and the ideas that sit behind individual pages and characters.
From Colour to Mask is now published as a 36-page A4 landscape picture book, written and illustrated in Darwin by Maria Grujicic.
