From Colour to Mask is an illustrated picture book about colour, imagination and creative transformation. Simple colours and shapes begin to move, change and become playful characters, inviting children to notice, imagine and create.
The story reflects Maria Grujicic’s process-led approach to art and encourages children to explore how an idea can grow from colour and form into character, story and mask-making.
Created and illustrated in Darwin, Northern Territory, the book connects visual art, imaginative play and creative learning.
From Colour to Mask also includes suggested creative activities for children to explore after reading the story.
Using simple materials such as plasticine, watercolour pencils and paint, children are encouraged to experiment with colour, shape and transformation — mixing colours, tracing forms, adding water to watercolour pencil, and imagining how a shape might become a creature, pattern, character or mask.
The activities are open-ended rather than step-by-step copying exercises, allowing children to respond in their own way and continue the story through their own creative making.
