Original printmaking, reimagined as wearable art.
The Tactile Study Pencil Skirt is developed from Torn Colour Study, an experimental printmaking work created during my university art practice.
The original work emerged through an intuitive process of printing, residual ink, layered surfaces, and torn and rearranged forms. Unexpected compositions developed through the making process — marks and shapes that were not completely planned, but discovered through experimentation.
A year later, I returned to these studies and began to see them differently: not simply as works on paper, but as possibilities for clothing and wearable art.
For this skirt, elements from Torn Colour Study have been translated across a fitted silhouette. The muted purple front carries the main composition, while the back shifts into a complementary blue field. A layered mustard and mauve treatment along the hem echoes the irregular torn edges and tactile qualities of the original artwork.
Rather than repeating the artwork continuously across the garment, the composition is deliberately concentrated on the front. The quieter back, contrasting colour fields and irregular hem details become part of the overall design.
The result is a skirt that carries traces of the original printmaking process while becoming something new through movement and wear.
Designed in Darwin, Australia, the Tactile Study collection reflects Maria Grujicic’s wider creative practice — shaped by art study, experimentation, travel, and years spent living and working internationally. Her wearable-art designs bring original studio processes into everyday clothing, using colour, texture and unexpected composition rather than conventional repeating fashion prints.
Early responses to the collection have especially highlighted its colour, originality and distinctive character.
