My Mystery Plants & Trees:
Adventures in the Ludmilla Bushblock book signing at Bookshop Darwin was filled with local stories, children’s drawings, family memories and conversations about nature.
The Bookshop Darwin team created such a welcoming setting for the event. I loved seeing my hand-sewn Maria Grujicic Studio banner alongside the green tablecloth, which seemed to bring the whole display together. My picture books, Ludmilla bushblock discovery map, postcards, bookmarks and small Studio Magazine were all ready for people to explore.
One of the most meaningful parts of the morning was being able to speak naturally about the story behind the book. Mystery Plants & Trees grew from my childhood memories of living near the Ludmilla bushblock in Darwin, and from returning to the area over many years to observe its trees, plants, birds, pathways and changing details.
People stopped to ask questions, share memories and talk about their own connections to Darwin’s natural places. It was heartening to see the bookshop full of readers and families interested in local stories, picture books and creative experiences.
Children’s Mystery Trees and imaginative places
During the event, children were invited to create their own Mystery Trees and imagined landscapes.
Every drawing had its own story. There were colourful trees, flowers, birds, hidden places, large skies, water, swings and imaginative creatures. The diversity of the drawings reminded me that children do not need to be told exactly what to create. When they are offered a gentle invitation, materials and time, they often bring their own experiences, memories and ideas to the page.
One detail that appeared again and again was the tree swing.
Hearing children talk about tree swings brought back memories of my own childhood in Darwin. We had a swing attached to our mango tree, and I remember spending long stretches of time outdoors: watching grass grow, noticing grasshoppers and crickets, playing with cats that came and went through the yard, listening to birdlife and playing cricket with my two brothers.
My mother loved gardening, and our yard was full of flowers, colour and changing life. My father sang songs to us in Greek, including “kounia bella, i mana sou tembella,” and I still remember his laughter and my mother’s gentle smile.
Those early experiences of garden life, imagination, observation and family storytelling continue to shape the way I create picture books, workshops and studio resources today.
Building stories through art and connection
For me, the most important part of sharing a book is building relationships through stories.
A child’s drawing of a tree, a swing, a flower or a sky can hold a whole world of memory and imagination. These drawings are not simply activities completed at an event. They are small visual stories, shaped by what children notice, remember, hope for and invent.
With parent permission, selected works from the event will be featured in the Maria Grujicic Studio online Children’s Art Gallery. The gallery will celebrate children’s creative responses to nature, place, books and imagination.
In time, I also hope to include examples of children’s wearable art and artist-designed pieces, showing that creative possibilities can keep growing beyond paper. A drawing can become a story, a postcard, a book, a workshop idea, an artwork, a garment or a shared memory.
