Mystery Plants & Trees Art Workshops in Darwin

​At the Musicking Maestros workshops, every child created their own mystery tree through drawing and watercolour.

We began with close observation: looking at bark lines, branches, textures, marks and the small details children noticed in natural materials. Children experimented with firmer pencil marks to suggest rough bark and texture, then built their drawings through line, pattern and colour.

The watercolour lessons introduced colour in a clear, playful and memorable way. Children explored how water changes paint, how colours can blend softly or stand out strongly, and how warm and cool colours create different feelings. Using the colour wheel, they discovered complementary colours — colours that sit opposite one another and “pop” when placed together.

The lessons were carefully structured in small steps, but there was always room for each child’s own imagination, decisions and visual language. This balance is central to my Montessori-informed approach: children are given purposeful materials, clear demonstrations and time to explore with growing independence.

What emerged across the two sessions was remarkable. Children concentrated deeply, took creative risks, experimented with colour and texture, and developed confidence in their own ideas. Each mystery tree was entirely different — full of personality, observation and imagination.

Montessori-Informed Creative Learning

My workshops are informed by Montessori principles, but shaped through my own practice as an artist, educator and storyteller.

​

I design lessons that are calm, tactile, sequential and open-ended. Children are invited to observe first, then respond through drawing, painting, movement, story and imaginative experimentation. Materials become invitations rather than instructions.

​

My background includes visual art, picture-book creation, Montessori practice, early childhood education, special-needs education, English as an additional language, drama, music and creative learning across different countries and communities. These experiences come together in workshops that support concentration, confidence, curiosity and genuine creative expression.

​

Each workshop is different. Children who have attended before will encounter new stories, materials, techniques and possibilities.

The two hours passed so quickly.

Thank you to every child and family who came along, listened to stories, shared ideas, drew a Mystery Tree and explored line, texture, colour and watercolour together.

​

It was wonderful to see children become so absorbed in their work — observing bark, branches and natural details, experimenting with pencil marks and paint, and creating their own imaginative trees inspired by Mystery Plants & Trees: Adventures in the Ludmilla Bushblock.

​

The workshops brought together storytelling, nature observation, drawing, watercolour and open-ended creative exploration. Children were supported through clear, playful mini-lessons, while still having space to follow their own ideas and make each artwork uniquely theirs.

​
